GENERAL QUESTIONS ON BESPOKE
What defines the My Tailor silhouette?
We blend the structured discipline of British tailoring with the "Sprezzatura" and softness of the Neapolitan style. This fusion creates a unique, comfortable, and timeless silhouette tailored to your personality.
Where are My Tailor garments crafted ?
Every piece is a result of Belgian expertise. We handle high-end "Grande Mesure" in our Brussels atelier, while our specialized workshops in Naples and Porto ensure the excellence of traditional finishes.
Why choose a Belgian bespoke house ?
Choosing My Tailor means opting for local expert service, an ethical choice, and an irreproachable quality. We offer a complete experience including professional colorimetry and a choice of 8,500 premium fabrics.
What is a bespoke garment?
Bespoke is the creation of a suit or shirt from a hand-cut pattern, with measurements adapted specifically to each person. The artisanal tailor starts from an existing pattern and brings the corrections desired by the client. At My Tailor, we do not begin the cutting of exceptional fabric until your order is confirmed and your specific measurements are validated.
Why choose a bespoke suit?
There are a thousand personal reasons. We propose four essential ones:
- Perfect adaptation to your morphology: The master tailor enhances even your smallest flaws thanks to exceptional fabrics.
- Underlined natural elegance: Fluid lines and a comfortable textile like no other garment.
- Renewed confidence: Feeling good in your bespoke creations boosts self-confidence.
- Rational and sustainable purchase: As the saying goes, one is not rich enough to buy cheap. Discover why investing in an artisanal suit is more profitable over time.
How to choose your bespoke tailor?
The advice of a close friend or family member remains the most precious. Otherwise, an Internet search coupled with consulting client reviews generally reveals a tailor with whom you will feel comfortable. It is always wise to choose an atelier close to your home or workplace to facilitate modifications.
What questions should you ask a tailor?
A good suggestion is to always visit as many tailors as possible and familiarize yourself with all styles and fabric choices available. A client should never feel rushed by a tailor to make a style choice. Instead, think about the type of fabric and colors that are most suitable, keeping in mind that there are no right or wrong choices. A good tailor will never be bothered by your questions.
What is the difference between ready-to-wear and bespoke?
Ready-to-wear consists of pieces sold as a finished product, not made to measure. It traditionally opposes "Haute Couture" for women and "Bespoke" for men. It involves buying a complete suit in a boutique and then adapting it to your morphology through alterations (shortening sleeves or trousers).
A bespoke suit is born from the choice of wool cloth, materials, and personalization options, cut and assembled with artisanal hand interventions. It is fashioned according to your individual measurements in our European workshops, naturally involving more production time.
Can I opt for a bespoke suit with an atypical morphology?
People with physical specificities, whether they are very tall, very
short, stout, or slim, are particularly welcome at My Tailor. By definition, these individuals will finally have the chance to wear an artisanal garment perfectly adapted to their unique morphology.
For tall people: Sleeves that are too short, trousers that are too short, jackets that are too narrow at the shoulders... all these ready-to-wear flaws disappear with a personalized suit.
For short people: Sleeves that are too long, trousers that need considerable shortening, ill-suited proportions... sartorial bespoke creates perfect proportions for your stature.
For stout people: Tight jackets, uncomfortable trousers, cuts that do not flatter... our master tailor draws lines that enhance your silhouette and provide elegance and comfort.
For slim people: Sagging jackets, trousers that are too wide, lack of structure... the made-to-measure suit provides the right volume and proportions.
The work of the master tailor makes you forget any morphological particularity by creating perfect harmony between the garment and the wearer.
Evolution of your morphology: If you lose or gain weight after production,
we can always adapt your personalized suit thanks to the unique pattern created for you. This flexibility represents a considerable advantage of artisanal bespoke: your investment adapts to the natural evolution of your body over time. It is precisely for these situations that bespoke tailoring reveals its full value and necessity.
What is the right style for a bespoke suit?
Choosing a bespoke suit means opting for the style and cut that are most comfortable and flattering for the person wearing it. There are no right or wrong choices, only preferences. The artisanal suit must adjust proportionally to the wearer's body and be comfortable to wear.
Which styles of cut do you offer?
At My Tailor, we master two distinct stylistic philosophies that reflect the European sartorial heritage:
The English "Understatement" style:
This British approach favors elegant discretion and technical perfection.
- Strict and structured cut: sharp lines, marked shoulders, straight silhouette
- Sober elegance: classic colors, discreet finishes, subtle details
- Rigorous construction: firm canvassing, impeccable hold, perfect drape
- "Less is more" philosophy: refinement through simplicity and irreproachable quality
- Ideal for: Formal environments, business, official occasions
The Neapolitan "Sprezzatura":
This Italian philosophy celebrates relaxed elegance and the art of appearing naturally chic.
- Soft and natural cut: "spalla camicia" shoulder, lightweight construction, fluid movement
- Casual elegance: personalized details, expressive colors, touches of originality
- Comfort above all: freedom of movement, breathable fabrics, natural wear
- Art of controlled imperfection: slightly curved pocket, perfectly
imperfect collar - Ideal for: Modern lifestyle, creatives, assertive personalities
Our My Tailor expertise: Our master tailors master both schools perfectly. During your consultation, we will analyze your personality, lifestyle, and needs to advise the style that suits you best. It is even possible to create a subtle mix of both approaches for a perfectly personalized result. Discover these styles in our Neapolitan workshops where Italian tradition and British excellence meet.
MADE-TO-MEASURE VS BESPOKE
What is the difference between Made-to-Measure and Bespoke?
Clients often do not distinguish between bespoke and made-to-measure. Unfortunately, brands sometimes profit from this confusion. The difference is palpable in the process and the final result. Discover ourcomplete MTM vs Bespoke guide.
Bespoke (Great Measure)requires the artisanal tailor to create a new pattern specifically designed for each client. Canvases are fitted directly on the client to perform measurements; corrections are made directly on the client in our Neapolitan workshops. When measurements are satisfactory, the master tailor can then cut each element of the suit and shape them entirely by hand. This service is for men who have time.
The pattern requires about 2 intermediate fittings to adjust it, then the artisanal suit is entirely handmade according to a traditional fully canvassed assembly with a wide range of sartorial finishes typical of the art of sewing. It generally takes 4 to 5 weeks to complete the work in our exceptional workshops.
Made-to-Measure (Small Measure)is a manufacturing process involving at least half of the work by hand and the rest by machine. The tailor starts from an existing pattern and brings all corrections desired by the client. During the fitting process, the specialized advisor performs all modifications that respond to anatomical particularities (inverted, arched, short sleeves, sloped shoulders...) as well as the client's tastes (curved fit, cigarette trousers...). This method allows the client to concretely imagine their personalized garment. Everything is adjusted in a maximum of one hour in the boutique. Three weeks later, we deliver a perfectly adjusted garment.
What is Neapolitan excellence ?
Our Neapolitan workshops perpetuate sartorial know-how spanning several generations, perfectly embodying the "Sprezzatura" philosophy - this Italian art of relaxed elegance. What distinguishes our artisanal production:
- Incomparable lightness: Neapolitan suits offer unmatched freedom of movement, incarnation of natural elegance
- The "spalla camicia" shoulder: Typically Neapolitan technique creating a slightly puckered shoulder that follows the silhouette without artifice
- The "barchetta" : Our breast pocket in the shape of a small boat, a discreet signature of Neapolitan elegance
- Hand finishes: Over 80% of operations are performed by hand in our European workshops
- The "punto a catenella": Traditional Neapolitan stitching ensuring flexibility and resistance
- Art of controlled imperfection: This casual elegance where every detail seems natural but hides a perfect technique
This "Sprezzatura" approach opposes the rigor of British understatement to create a more relaxed, lively, and Mediterranean style.

How to recognize the quality of good wool ?
The quality of wool is the set of criteria describing the wool fiber (sheep hair) in its raw state. The characteristics taken into account:
- The origin of the animal: Merino sheep produce the finest wools
- The age of the animal: Fibers generally thicken with age
- Chemical treatments applied to the fleece
- Presence of hair: Only down fibers can be used
- Color: The whiter the wool, the better it suits light dyes
- Average length and diameter of fibers
- The "crimp": The number of natural twists per unit length
- Mechanical resistance determining the ability to undergo spinning, weaving, and finishing
Super 100's, 120's, 140's... How to understand them ?
These designations indicate the fineness of the wool fiber, not the quality of the fabric. A Super 100's wool will be thicker than a Super 130's. Being finer, the fiber offers a softer and silkier touch, capturing light better, but will naturally be more fragile.
A Super 80 will give a thicker wool, therefore a suit better suited for winter. Approach Super 150 for a lighter and more breathable wool.
Which fabric to choose for my bespoke suit ?
This crucial question requires analyzing your needs. The fabric varies according to seasonality - you do not wear a heavy cloth under a blazing sun or light in extreme cold. The weight plays a key role. Is it a daily suit or exclusively for special occasions? These questions guide towards the most suitable fabric.
Do you use only natural fabrics ?
Yes, My Tailor uses only natural and authentic fabrics for the greatest satisfaction of its clients. Animal fabrics like wool or plant fabrics like linen, we carefully select superior quality fabrics to ensure the durability of your bespoke garments.
Can I bring my own fabric for a bespoke suit or shirt ?
Absolutely! We gladly accept working with your personal fabrics, whether for a suit or a bespoke shirt. This approach allows creating truly unique pieces with cloths that are dear to you - family heritage, exceptional find, or favorite fabric.
The rate will depend on the complexity of the work required and the chosen manufacturing mode:
- Small measure: Pricing adapted according to the nature of the fabric and desired finishes
- Great measure: Price adjusted according to technicality and necessary artisanal time
We evaluate each project individually during a consultation to offer you the best technical and pricing approach. Do not hesitate to bring us your fabric so that our master tailors can appreciate the quality and advise you on manufacturing possibilities.
COMPLETE PRODUCT RANGE
Do you make bespoke suits for women ?
Absolutely. We create everything bespoke for women: women's suits, women's tuxedos, blazers, trousers, skirts, dresses, women's coats, bespoke blouses, and spencers. Our exceptional cloths come from the best global weavers and we guarantee irreproachable quality with fully artisanal finishes.
We do not design a range that suits every woman, but allow every woman to design a bespoke wardrobe that suits her. Discover ourcomplete women's universe.
Do you create bespoke suits for children ?
Yes, we make bespoke suits for children from 8 years old. As for dads, we understand that it is difficult for parents to make the right choice. Growing boys often feel the need to have a say. We believe that a philosophy taught from childhood develops a sense of taste and becomes a guide for life.
However, let's recall that a major advantage of bespoke is durability. As a child is destined to change morphology, it may be less relevant to invest in a garment that will not last as we guarantee for our other creations.
Do you offer bespoke coats ?
Certainly. Putting on a coat with a perfect cut ensures your elegance everywhere. Depending on the chosen material, your bespoke coat allows you to go out in absolute comfort whilst maintaining your level of elegance. We offer a wide range of fabrics and even leather options suitable for all seasons.
For women, our approach is identical: warmth in winter, protection in autumn, or lightness and elegance in spring. Discover our women's coats.

- Tuxedos for women since the Yves Saint-Laurent revolution, symbol of emancipation and elegance
Do you make bespoke underwear ?
Yes, we offer bespoke boxer shorts made with our fabric scraps, responding to an eco-responsible approach. This extreme personalization - fabric quality, color, buttons, embroidery - offers unique pleasure to the man adept at comfort and elegance. Our models include Fedora, Homburg, Trilby, Borsalino, Top hat for men, and Capelines for women, with personalized finishes (raw or trimmed edges, velvet/leather/grosgrain interiors).
What is a spencer ?
The spencer is a short jacket that stops at waist level, having become essential for women wanting a chic and simple outfit. Originally a male military garment, it has perfectly integrated into women's fashion. Combined with a bespoke blouse, it creates a surprising harmony worn in all circumstances.
Do you offer corporate clothing ?
Certainly. We consider that valuing the person behind the garment is essential when wearing a uniform. Our technical know-how responds to the most complex specifications. TECHNICAL DETAILS AND FINISHES
What are the different types of lapels ?
The notched lapel is the most common. Its simplicity has allowed it to conquer almost all cuts. This straight notch, simple or sport, originates from rider jackets. It is therefore rather informal.
The peak lapel is historical and is still used for tuxedos and other evening wear. It can be found on suits, but it sometimes passes for pretentious, which is incorrect if worn well. It is almost exclusive to double-breasted jackets.
The shawl collar is used for certain tuxedos. It had a nice career with Brandenburg smoking jackets, clothes, waistcoats, and dressing gowns.
The Smalto lapel is a French peculiarity found mainly in large workshops or certain luxury ready-to-wear. This model is called the Camps notch, as it was originally designed by the tailor Camps de Luca de la Madeleine. Francesco Smalto invented it when he was a tailor at Camps. It is also called "Parisian notch" or "tailor notch". It is a successful combination of sport and sharp notch
What is a floating canvas ?
A floating canvas is a piece of coarse cloth, often hemp, cut to the size of the fabric and placed between the fabric and the suit lining. The canvas is sewn to the canvas. Although it does not float in the suit, it takes its name "floating canvas" by molding around the body over time to offer optimal fit.
Traditional suits use canvas to cover the entire front of the suit. Half-canvas suits were introduced to offer a lighter feel and reduce costs. With the advent of fused canvas, manufacturers use chemicals to melt the jacket interface. Compared to horsehair canvases, fused canvases start to bubble after two years of dry cleaning.
What is a lining ?
A lining is the smooth and silky fabric composing the interior of your jacket. It separates the wool fabric from the body and provides comfort to the wearer. Often, bespoke clients choose their lining fabric to adopt a more flamboyant color as a style choice and for pleasure.
Can I personalize my lining with my own patterns or logos ?
Certainly! Lining personalization is one of our most appreciated services to create a truly unique garment. You can personalize your lining with:
- Your personal patterns: Drawings, photos, artistic creations
- Your company logo: For corporate or professional clothing
- Initials or monograms: Personalized embroidery or prints, with surcharge depending on complexity
- Family motifs: Coats of arms, significant symbols
- Original creations: Any image close to your heart
- Floral embroidery: Delicate motifs embroidered directly on the lining with surcharge depending on intricacy
Technical requirements:To prepare an optimal quality printing canvas, we need your files in high resolution (minimum 300 DPI) and in suitable formats (AI, EPS, high-quality PDF, or high-definition images). Our artisans will advise you on technical feasibility and best rendering options for your project.
Additional delay:Personalized linings require 2 additional weeks to our standard deadlines for meticulous canvas preparation and professional quality printing.
This personal touch transforms the interior of your bespoke garment into a true signature, visible only to you but a source of pleasure at each wear.
What is a buttonhole ?
A buttonhole often describes how to place a small flower, floral decoration, or pin in the lapel hole of a jacket.
What is a Milanese buttonhole ?
There is a wide variety of buttonhole styles, but the Milanese buttonhole is a popular choice. This style comes from Milan and is longer than classic buttonholes. Due to its stitching, it sits slightly higher on the fabric and appears more visible. It is a style that takes more time, sometimes up to two hours per buttonhole.
What types of cufflinks do you offer ?
Our exceptional cufflinks represent the pinnacle of masculine elegance. We offer a refined range of noble materials:

WARRANTY AND SATISFACTION
Do you guarantee the result of your bespoke garments ?
Absolutely. We support every garment with a complete satisfaction guarantee. If the fit does not suit you (within six months following manufacturing), we will modify it according to your needs or remake it for free.
Our garments being created specifically for each client, we do not accept returns or refunds (except irreparable error on our part, extremely rare but errors happen...).
What happens if my measurements change ?
One of the great advantages of My Tailor bespoke is its adaptability over time. Thanks to the unique pattern created specifically for you, we can always adapt your existing and future garments according to your morphological evolution.
Adaptation of existing garments:If you lose or gain weight, gain or lose muscle, we can adjust your suits, shirts, and other creations to maintain perfect fit. This flexibility preserves your investment over time.
Update of your pattern:During each visit, we retake measurements to refine and correct your personal pattern. This morphological database allows us to create new garments perfectly adapted to your current silhouette.
Long-term follow-up:You thus have the guarantee to always enjoy the comfort and elegance of an adapted garment, whatever the natural evolution of your body. This is what fundamentally distinguishes bespoke from ready-to-wear: your wardrobe evolves with you.
MAINTENANCE AND CARE
How to maintain my bespoke suit ?
After each wear, hang your suit outside the wardrobe overnight to let humidity and odors escape. Hang trousers by the bottom hem with a hanger - weight naturally undoes creases, reducing need for ironing.
Your suits should only be dry cleaned if physically dirty, generally a few times a year. If the garment needs refreshing, use a hand steamer or entrust it to a reputable dry cleaner.
Although dry cleaning itself does not harm the garment (if done correctly), too many dry cleaners neglect equipment maintenance and use dirty chemicals. Moreover, poor quality pressing can make your suits look old and tired. Invest in the best dry cleaner in your region.
How to maintain my bespoke shirt ?
Unlike suits, shirts can be washed in water or dry cleaned. Wash in lukewarm water (not hot) and iron by hand with hot iron. Find a dry cleaner who treats shirts in-house, as most send them to commercial laundries using very hot water and strong chemicals. This rigorous process shortens your shirts' life.
Avoid starch which weakens cotton fibers and can cause fabric to wear faster. Remove collar stays before cleaning - they will leave burn marks if shirt is pressed with stays still in collar.
For armpit stains, collar, food... apply stain remover as soon as you remove shirt and have it washed as soon as possible. The longer a stain stays on fabric, the harder it becomes to remove.
Keep in mind that some shrinkage will occur. After one or two washes, a new shirt will shrink about 0.5 to 1 cm at collar and sleeves. This amount is already integrated into your measurements.
ADVANCED QUESTIONS
How many fittings are necessary ?
For bespoke (great measure), count about 2 intermediate fittings to adjust pattern, then a final fitting.
For made-to-measure (small measure), generally one fitting suffices, everything adjusting in maximum one hour in boutique.
How do you create a pattern ?
For bespoke, we create a new pattern specifically for each client. Toiles are mounted directly on client to perform measurement, corrections are done live. Once measurements satisfactory, we can cut each element and shape them entirely by hand.
Can I modify an order in progress ?
This depends on manufacturing progress. Before fabric cutting, all modifications remain possible. Once cutting started, only minor adjustments can be envisaged.
What do you offer for urgent weddings ?
For very urgent requests, we can reduce delays to two weeks. We also offer our travel service to optimize time and specific wedding suit creations with all adapted finishes.
How does remote fitting work ?
For our international consultations, we take your measurements during our trips, then perform manufacturing in our workshops. Final fitting is done during our next passage or via secure delivery with possibility of adjustments.
